First Aid Dummies

UPDATED: 08-11-2024 (originally published 08-01-2022)

The First Aid Station has been one of the most difficult stations to plan and score.

We have done scenarios with live actors playing our victims; we’ve selected a patrol member to be the victim; and we’ve done verbal scenarios.

Now, we’d like to introduce you to Moe, Larry and Curly, our first aid dummies.

How did we built them?

We used the AHA Adult & Child CPR Anytime Kit for the head/chest. This means that we can do CPR scenarios.

For the rest of the body, Steve put his engineering/building skills to work. PVC pipes make up the limbs. The joints were constructed in such a way that they will (mostly) behave like that joint should, ie. the knees are not double jointed.

The back is made out of wood to provide the necessary structure for the limbs to attach to. A travel pillow acts as an abdomen.

The following video is not the best description of how we built the dummies but it’s a start. Here is a link to the PDF rough sketch. Here is a link to the Google Photo Album with pics/videos.

What kind of scenarios can you expect now?

We can do a number of different scenarios that I’m not listing here but these are some highlights:

Because of the Anytime CPR Kit, we can now do breathing and CPR scenarios.

The limbs are constructed in such a way that certain parts can be detached to simulate a broken leg/arm.

We are looking at how to do a bleeding scenario with some form of liquid (probably water to reduce mess) that would better simulate a bleeding emergency.

Of course, you will have to transport one of our dummies so you’ll need to know how to do that.

The scenarios will all be setup to where your patrol will have a dummy and a narrator who will provide you with information and answer your questions. Remember, communicate what you are doing. The narrator can’t tell you if there is a pulse on an extremity if you don’t demonstrate & ask.

Do you have any questions?

Your Troop leader should have our contact information if you are signed up to attend and can ask questions. If you’re not signed up to attend but have questions, use the form on the contact us page.
